Not all Shadow Work in the Same - A Unique Perspective

Course Overview

The Shadow, as defined by Carl Jung: the elements of ourselves that have been labeled undesirable. Examples are fear, pain, emotional expression, rage, resentment, victimhood, and so on.

Modern psychologist Carl Jung coined the term shadow work. He describes the shadow as the unknown dark side of the personality. According to Jung, the shadow side of our personality is instinctive or primitive, prone to projecting onto others, and the rationalization or justification of destructive or unacceptable behaviors. It is the highly unevolved or immature aspects of our personality. In this view, the shadow is viewed as morally inferior or deficient.

In my work, I view the shadow a bit differently. Of course, I honor the work of Carl Jung. Jung brought us some valuable tools and insights into the shadow within the realm of modern psychology. However, I find that his and the modern psychological view of the shadow is overly clinical. An overly linear approach to wellness will stunt our ability to reach true holistic wellness. I have spent many years working the shadow through a holistic lens. I am a Reiki Master, NLP practitioner, herbalist, and witch. I know the benefit of treating the whole self. In Jung’s shadow theory, the focus is primarily on the psyche and is not seated at the table with holism. Truthfully they are not even in the same room. To reach holistic wellness and healing, we must connect the two and find a way they can work together. The good thing is our ancestors figured this bit out ages ago.

When I first began working the shadow through the psychological lens, I could not help feeling something was missing. There was a gaping hole I could not fill through this one-sided method of shadow work. The feeling nagged at me until I began digging deeper and using my shamanic and magickal training to guide me. In addition to the mind, I realize that I need to address the physical body and spirit and honor my connections to the earth - straight down through my ancestral line. Through additional training and questioning, I found the missing piece. The answers were right in front of me, and I could not see them. It was about energy and connection. We commune with and are attached to energies that came to us long before birth. The energy of past lives, ancestors, trauma passes through our DNA and generational curses. There is much more to consider when dealing with the shadow. This consideration goes beyond clinical theories and practices. It only makes sense to create and hold space for all of these areas as we work on resolving the issues of the shadow.

You came into this world pure, filled with potential and energy. As you grow and venture out into the world, you may find your bold spirit throttled by unfair conditioning. It is time to reclaim your power hiding in the shadow.

Here is a brief look at what we will consider within this course.

Week One, Introduction to Shadow Work

This is where we will discover the tools and flow of this course. We will begin by reviewing the course and its expectations. WE will discuss the requirements for a successful Shadow Work journey and how you become the master of your energy.

Week Two, Earth

Earth is where we will build a solid foundation. Here you will learn to become observant of the preconceived ideas, expectations, and messages you have learned to accept. You walk in the forest among the trees. You see each tree in its uniqueness each contribution. Each fulfilling its purpose without apology and without concern of how it appears to others. Each flaw is beautiful. Each scar is a reminder of its strength... You take with you, rootedness, stability, physical strength knowing you are the sum of someone else’s expectations. In Earth, we will re-establish our connection to nature, conduct rituals in nature, and create a foundation of positive reinforcement. You will learn to nurture yourself as you prepare yourself for this shadow work journey.

Week 3, Air

Working with the element of air you will learn to release the opinions of others. You stand in the breeze as you hear for the last time the disparaging comments and opinions of others. These messages are replaced in your ears with positive encouragement and knowledge of what you need to do to be authentic moving forward. You take with you the knowledge that you are doing the best you can with what you know. You will begin to know better and because you know better you will do better as you evolve on your journey. In Air, you will connect with your guides and begin to forge relationships with Deities who will guide you on your shadow work journey.

Week 4, Fire

We will release your shame and anger toward yourself. We will sit in the warrior’s flame and burn away the messages, beliefs, and blockages that hold us back. Each blockage will turn to ash as you work with your spirit guides and patrons. In the fire you will learn dance in the fire cleansing toxic habits, attitudes, and associations from your journey, leaving your passion and a fierce love for yourself to remain.

Week 5, Water

We will take a journey into the womb. You will learn to dream and manifest your dreams into reality. As you are birthed back into the world, you take with you a vision of your true self and knowledge of your authenticity. You will bring with you the realization that you are filled with infinite potential and creative power.

Week 6, Spirit

Integration is where you learn to release the old version of yourself. You have gained a new perspective, now you must reshape the world around you to match your current path and vision. You have been to the depths of your soul, and you are reborn. You know you are a representation of the goddess. From within the darkness, you are transformed. It is time to take what you have learned and apply it to your new life filled with endless possibilities.
